Assoc. Prof. Dr. Jessica Ong Hai Liaw

- Dr. Jessica Ong Hai Liaw is an Associate Professor and Deputy Dean of Administration and Students Affairs in Faculty of Defence Studies and Management, National Defence University of Malaysia (NDUM). She is attached to Department of Nationhood, Leadership and Civilisation. Jessica is also a part-time Newscaster and TV Host in Radio Television Malaysia (RTM).
- She also does emcee for government and private events. Jessica received her Certificate Education in English Language Studies, Year 1999 at Institut Perguruan Darulaman, Kedah, Malaysia. Her first degree in History and Anthropology & Sociology from Universiti Sains Malaysia in Year 2001. She then pursued her Master Degree in Malay Language Studies in Year 2007 in Universiti Putra Malaysia and she was the program's best student.
- Her Ph.D degree in Year 2010 researched on Linguistics Communication Amongst Autistic Children via Casual Talk Method. She was awarded a Ph.D degree in May 2010. Her expertise is related to Social Sciences in Malay language (Psycholinguistics, Communications and Media). She is also expertise in media management, public relations, ethnic relations, and corporate communication.
- She is appointed to be the Assoc. Editor in Chief of International Journal in Business and Management, Editor in International Journal on Humanities and Social Sciences (RMP Publications) and the Editorial board member for International Journals of Advanced Scientific Research and Management (IJASRM) and GIAP Journals. Jessica is active as editor and reviewer in government and private conferences, researches, journals and translated books. Currently, she is also appointed by some company as a Research and Policy Advisor, Project Advisor, MARCOM and Public Relations Advisor and Media.
- She is active in NGO’s and CSR projects was appointed as Ambassador for Persatuan Pesakit Kanak-kanak (PEKA) Hospital Universiti Sains Malaysia. Currently, she is the Deputy Chairman of Persatuan Pembangunan Penduduk Malaysia (PPPM) and committee for Malaysian Media Property Awards and Young Professionals of the Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport Malaysia.
- She was awarded as Chartered Member (CMILT) from The International Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport on 2016. Jessica was honored to receive Special Award in Leadership in Marketing Communication (MARCOM) during Malaysian Media Property Awards on the 20th December 2017. Jessica has her own newspaper column “Lekat di Hati” in Utusan Malaysia from year 2012. Her books title. Kaedah Santai Tutur untuk Kanak-kanak Autisme (2012), Memori Seorang Jeneral (2016) dan Minda Jessica (2017). Chapter in the Book: The Relationship between Malay, Chinese and Arab World: A Comprehensive Study in Philosophical Thoughts (2017) and Kepemimpinan Era Moden(2018).
Abstract
CONTEMPORARY MEDIA: THE IMPACT OF SOCIAL COMMUNICATION TOWARDS NEW GENERATION
‘Contemporary’ or ‘New Media’ is typically technology-driven media derived from the internet. This means online publications, social media, blogs, streaming video, and podcasts. The easy access of media today will affect the social communication skills to current young people can be described as ‘Click’ or ‘Go Generation’. The increasing amount of different ways to receive and send information today may occupy most of the time for any individual to react based on their own way to express. Shaun Gallagher’s, Interaction Theory in social cognition to the recent surge of interactionist approaches to social cognition. The mainstream mindreading approaches neglect the interactive contexts in which social cognition is embedded and extended processes that are engaged in interactions and the components of social cognition. The impact of social communication dimension lacks of family and friends, security, privacy and ability to predict. New generation will search for more answers and copy or modify from references to act. It may be correct or may have negative impact but many would be seeking for the most popular vote from the Internet polling to make the decision. Human will have a robotic gesture and may not develop the character of the individual. The more they depend on media as the source, it will destroy the genuinely of the newer generation in socialising whether within the immediate family members to public areas. The education of development in social communication shall always be the responsibility of the parents, educators and organisations to ensure the baseline is set in any form given the opportunity towards the Fourth Industrial Revolution.
